Cycling In Brighton - Bike Week 2010 Video

Brighton and Hove have released a Bike Week 2010 video on YouTube. The film launches Bike Week, a week of free events organised by the city council from 19-27 June 2010 to celebrate cycling. The week incudes free breakfasts if you cycle to work, a pop up photography studio 'changing gear' where you can have your photo taken with your bike (in fancy dress if you wish!), Bike film at the Duke of York's cinema, live music and lots more. Cycle counters set for launch in Bike Week

Old Shoreham Cycle Lane officially axed

We reported on 6th March that the Old Shoreham Road cycle scheme had been scrapped following a Council response to a question asked by Green Group Transport Spokesperson, Cllr Ian Davey. On Thursday 25th March, Cllr Geoffrey Theobald officially confirmed at the Environment Cabinet Member Meeting that they would not be proceeding with the proposals because of ward councillors’ concerns over safety, although no expert evidence was presented to back up this claim.

THOUSANDS OF RESIDENTS TO BE DISAPPOINTED AT SCRAPPING OF OLD SHOREHAM RD CYCLE ROUTE

Brighton and Hove City Council have dropped plans for the Old Shoreham Road cycle route whch was to run from BHASVIC college in Hove to Applesham Way in Portslade. This important route has been in the pipeline for some years and 15,000 people, schools and businesses were consulted on the plans in 2009 at an estimated cost of over £100,000. The proposed route was believed to be highly popular but also came under criticism from cycling and transport experts for discontinuity, narrow lanes, pinch points and inadequate junction treatments.

Cycle counters are UK first for Brighton & Hove

Lewes Road Bike Train pilot starts in March

biketrain_lcc.jpgDuncan Blinkhorn of Lewes Road for Clean Air is planning a “Bike Train” so that cyclists can gather and ride together at intervals, convoy style between the Level and Falmer. Duncan said: “Bike Train aims to create a safe space in the form of scheduled mass rides, where cyclists are highly visible and able to hold the road for each other on routine journeys to work, school and university.”

Bendy bus hazard for Brighton & Hove

London’s “bendy buses” are being decommissioned on the grounds that they’re dangerous and have encouraged fare dodging. These are now being sold off cheap, so Brighton and Hove Bus and Coach Company have trialled one on the 25 bus route to the Universities where the current bus service is at capacity. In our latest newsletter we look at the impact of these buses on cyclists on the Lewes Road.
